As I mentioned in my previous post Solidarity or Statement?, Trent Reznor was shown in the latest video for Nine Inch Nails’ newest single Survivialism wearing what is traditionally called a keffiyeh.
Due to the nature of the video being shot in black and white, you can’t honestly tell if the scarf is really black and white, or what.
Of course, give it time and a picture will show up.
There you have it. It’s actually a khaki-brown colour with the black design.
Trent’s a sneaky devil.

It’s actually green and black, the color in that pic is a little off. If you want to get really technical, that’s a shemagh and is of the British military issue variety. Dating back to WWII (in northern Africa), the Brit SAS would wear them about.
It’s a really neat idea (I bought one like Reznor’s via the Intarweb about seven years ago, and a tan one a little more than a year ago) and it does well to keep the sand and sun from eating you up… Not to mention hot cartridge casings, which have a tendency to go down the back of your shirt.
The shemagh is thinner variety of Keffiyah (AFAIK) with smaller tassels on the edge. I wear mine around the house, as the wife refuses to let me go into public with it on.
The shemagh/Keffiyah has only picked up its status quo as being related to Jihadis/Muj wannabes since the insurgence of Intifada of the 90’s. Regardless, I dig them.

we are selling keffiyehs in our shop for years now and most people bought it for pratical reasons (its warm and the long product durability) but it got very much fashionable these days.
i dont think that a mentionable amount of our customers buys these things for political reaons. so let them be!
in germany there is a big discussion about “keffiyeh = antisemitism”, which is stupid and dosn’t help the littlest bit to make the world a better place. but some people on the left are very good in arguing about unimportant details.
nearly every style or symbol in the world can be associated with something bad (military style boots, the christian cross, white hats, …). so where is the point in handing over the symbols to the extremists?
sorry for the bad english.
